Ritter
Auswanderer über Hamburg 2

City Chemnitz & Lichtenstein-Callnberg. Origin of the ancestors of Debbie Stohn.

Debbie Stohn from New Hempshire reports that

according to old traditions her ancestors came from the

north of Denmark. They emigrated to Holland and

were called “Steinn” at that time. Later they moved to

Lichtenstein-Callnberg in Saxonia. The family worked

in the textile industry and emigrated 1880 via Hamburg

to New York. The original passenger lists can still be

found in the State Archive of Hamburg. You can view

them under 6. Auswanderung von Stohns .  In New

Jersey the family build it’s own textile company.

Further descendants live today in the US and in Canada.

The eldest known person of this line is Karl Gustav

Stohn whose line can be found under "Descendants by

Karl Gustav Stohn"

Has the name Stohn maybe come from Scandinavia? Do all the Stohns living

in the Pirna area have the same ancestors? The Stohns lived in Saxonia already

before 1600. When did the emigrate from Holland to Saxonia? There are still

many open questions. Debbie will check her sources more indepth and inform

us about further details she might find. There might even exist a coat of arms

for her family. I hope to be able to publish more shortly.

If there is also a connection between the Stohns from Lithuania/Poland and

those from Saxonia the following theory could be possible: During the Eastern

expansion between 1200 – 1400 the Stohns settled in Saxonia. They are of

Jewish origin and came originally from the Rhineland, where many Jewish

communities lived at that time. 1537 virtually all Jews were driven out of

Saxonia or converted to Christianity in order to be able to stay. Many of those

who had to leave moved to Lithuania. Among them  might have been members

of the Stohn families. Those who remained in Saxonia settled around the Pirna

area, some moved to other parts of Germany in the course of the years. The

Lithuanian Stohn emigrated to Denmark and to the US during the 19th century.
